Welcome to Nathan's page for the Bike to Beat Cancer 2013
I'm participating in the Bike to Beat Cancer, a one day cycling event to benefit Norton Cancer Institute.
I began cycling again this past summer and have enjoyed multiple rides with my wife's best friend, Jen Miklavcic. Jen has been part of the Frankfort team (Team Just Cycle) in the Bike to Beat Cancer for a few years now and I was happy to support her in the ride in 2012. As Jen and her teammates began training for the ride, I had the opportunity to ride with her mother-in-law, Rosie, who is also on the team as well as the team captain, Julie King. I was impressed by their dedication to supporting such a worthwhile cause and admired how much money they were able to raise in the fight against cancer.
When my wife, Shannan, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in December 2012, we were referred to an oncologist at the Norton Cancer Institute. I had been contemplating riding in the Bike to Beat Cancer prior to Shannan's diagnosis. But, when the news came and Shannan started receiving what has been truly excellent care at Norton, there was really no decision to be made. It's something I have to do. My goal is to ride 100 miles during this year's ride (my first century ride) and raise at least $1,000.
Shortly following Shannan's diagnosis, there was a suggestion that some of Shannan's friends and family might like to have a t-shirt made to show their support and solidarity for Shannan in her fight against cancer. During the design process, it was suggested that we could potentially use this opportunity to raise some funds to offset the loss of Shannan's income and medical bills or possibly support a charity. Shannan and I both felt so incredibly blessed by all the support that we received from our friends and family that we welcomed the opportunity to pay it forward. So, we decided to dedicate the proceeds from the "Shannan's Warriors" t-shirt campaign in support of the Bike to Beat Cancer. (Note: The proceeds from the t-shirts are represented in the fundraising honor roll as Teespring, LLC - the name of the t-shirt company.)
Thanks to the excellent care we've received at Norton and the love and support from our community of family and friends, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel of our cancer journey. Please consider supporting my efforts to build hope and helping to share that same light with others.
Thanks in advance for your help and for being one of Shannan's Warriors!
